Did you notice how one of the first interactions was to ask for the email address? This is key to helping the growth of your mailing list. By adding this statement to your email, you are giving your website visitors a way to unsubscribe if they want to and you are letting them know what to expect when they receive an email from you in case they choose to stay.

If this is the case, it is a good idea to find out what's on their mind by asking additional questions during the chat. Such as…

  • If you were searching, what words did you type in that lead you to our website?
  • Which of these would describe you (provide 3 options that would lead them to one of your services, i.e., DIYer, Group coaching, 1:1 coaching)?

Whether you call it online courses or learning online or e-learning, it's all the same. Each of these allows you to create an online environment where you can teach others by sharing your knowledge. And by sharing your knowledge, you can enrich your target customer's awareness about your given topic.

Empowering others by sharing your knowledge is a way to connect to your target customers and convert them to online buyers. Although there are many tools available for you to use to build your courses, it's important that you try different ones until you find one that fits your teaching style.

As we created our Website Coaching Academy, we found that it helps to create a basic outline and to follow it. The outline made it easy to create the content and to stay on target. Below are things we kept in mind when developing a strategy as we created our online courses. These tips are provided by Foundr.com:

  1. Define the problem: identify the issue that your customers need so you can provide a solution for it.
  2. Smoke test: validate your idea to see if your target customers are looking for this solution.
  3. Outline your course: determine learning goals that you want your students to gain.
  4. First-class of students: Before releasing your course to the public, start with a group of beta students who can “stress test” your course. Also, start creating a community where you and your students can communicate privately.
  5. Validate, reiterate, and validate again: always have in mind that you will tweak your product during the beta stage, so that you can have a better product to present to the public.

What should be included in an online course?

This is a great question too and we are going to take a look at what makes a successful online course. What you put into an online course is very important because you want to make it easy for your students to learn from you.

Let's take a quick look at the seven key components of a successful online course:

  1. Getting started section – this is where you can introduce and explain your course to your students. Also, giving them a guided tour through your course is helpful so that they can learn how to best use it and increase participation.
  2. Research, high market demand, and perfect topic. Start with researching the topic you want to cover. Then, make sure that it has a high market demand by your target students. Once you have refined your topic to be the “perfect topic,” create your content.
  3. Create content that speaks to your students' learning style. As you create content, make sure that you include components that will allow students to use their best learning style. According to Prezi Blog, there are four learning styles:
    1. Visual Learners: Prefer to see info and to visualize the relationship between ideas. Give them charts and graphics, make your [online course] highly visual and show the relationships between your various points.
    2. Auditory Learners: Prefer to hear info rather than reading it or seeing it displayed visually. Auditory learners like to recite information out loud to remember it; give them a chance to repeat your points back to you by asking questions and calling for audience answers.
    3. Reading/Writing Learners: Learn best when – you guessed it – reading and writing; interacting with text is more powerful for them than hearing or seeing images. Give these kinds of learners written “Quizzes” that give them a chance to write down what they have learned; present them with annotated handouts of your presentation, so they can read along with you.
    4. Kinesthetic Learners: Hands-on, experiential learners; they learn best by doing. Sprinkle in a few exercises that get your audience to stand up and move around in order to demonstrate or experience certain points (i.e. role-playing); you can also ask Kinesthetic learners to write things down in order to remember.

Incorporating these four learning styles into your online course will help you reach all those who are interested in your topic.

I've been in business since the '90s, and I've gained an understanding of overcoming the fear of growing your business. So, if you are facing this same fear, you are not alone. Fear is natural. It is an unknown factor in the future. However, when you allow that fear to overtake potential, then you are allowing it to dictate how your life will go. Now that you have your fear pinpointed, its time to move forward.

When overcoming the fear of growing your business, you do not want to be alone. Finding that right fit to help cheer you along does not have to break your bank account. I have gone through the pains of growing and branding a business online, and I want to share my experiences with you. I have learned through trial and error over the years of what works and what does not.

Claiming “Me Time”

When you are running a business, one of the things that you are going to find is that personal time becomes harder to get. As I have grown my business, I have been able to add members to my team. This has allowed me to outsource a lot of the tasks that I was doing myself. By delegating the work, and creating an organization that works together, productivity is at an all-time high. I can take a day off knowing that work will continue. This allows my body to relax.

By relaxing and having some downtime, I am able to be more productive. I find that I get more ideas and brainstorming done during personal time, as there is not a lot to distract me. Some of my best ideas have hit me while getting a pedicure! One piece of advice: Always carry a pen and paper or add an audio recording app to your phone. You can even use Google Keep to record and track your ideas You never know when inspiration will strike!

Optimize, Optimize, Optimize

Did I mention optimize? I cannot stress this enough! Be sure that your website, blog, and social media are optimized for maximum efficiency. For some, simply having a website is good enough. However, if you want to attract more customers, and build your client base, you need to ensure that you can be found. This rolls into BRANDING.

By branding your business, and making sure that you are visible to your target base, you can be seen so you can sell! Branding your business, and optimizing your efforts will help raise your rankings on search engines. Your target base will not find you if you are buried in the white pages. Brand yourself, optimize, and grow!

Because I optimize all of my pages and social media, I was able to be found on LinkedIn, by a corporate client. Because of this, I was able to land a five-figure, multi-year contract!  If someone tries to tell you that optimization does not work, I can tell you otherwise. I continually come up in each of the searches that the potential, now a long-time client, performed, proving that optimization DOES work.

Refuse To Barter Your Services

When it comes to bartering your services, this can be hard to get around. In the beginning, it might seem like a great idea. You get a service by providing a service in return. However, once this process is started, it can be extremely hard to break.

By realizing the worth of your business and the investment that you have made, sticking to your price list will ensure that you attract a loyal customer base. Don’t get caught in the game of “this for that.” Let your business shine!

The Interview with Jerrilynn

Question 1. Why did you want to learn more about WordPress?

I wanted to be in control of my web presence instead of having to wait for someone to perform updates and add content. In actuality, it makes good business sense to learn how to manage WordPress even if you have someone managing it for you. You need to understand what it is that you are paying someone to do.

Question 2. What problem did you have before you learned about WordPress?

I had to wait for things to be done on my website. Whether it was putting my site in maintenance mode, finding plugins, adding RSS feeds, etc., I was dependent on you.

Question 3. How did my WordPress coaching help prepare you to create and manage your own website?

It empowered me. You helped me learn a new skill. Because of you, I can help my daughter with her WordPress site. Kim, you and I have been through numerous websites together. Each website has stretched my knowledge due to you constantly changing where you get your themes from as well as the numerous WordPress versions. My current website project using Divi is a perfect example of your coaching skills. At first, I was hesitant to learn how to use Divi. I let you set up the first test pages. You finally took it upon yourself to show me how to browse the numerous themes to find the modules that interested me. Then you showed me to copy and paste them into an existing theme to modify it. To make sure I felt comfortable using Divi, you made a video that showed you do it step by step. Since then, I have spread my creative wings and ventured out on my own by combining features from several different Divi themes.

Question 4. What were some of the ways that I helped you learn WordPress?

Trial and error are the first things that come to mind. You let me mess up to reinforce your lessons. As you know, I love plugins. The side effects of too many plugins are bogging down your site and crashing it due to incompatibility. You saved me numerous times. I used to panic. Now I know how to log in and turn off the faulty plugins. In actuality, you sometimes trick me into learning. I get rewarded with new tools if I master the lesson you are teaching me. I don't think of you as a coach. I consider you to be one of my collaborative business partners.

Question 5. How were you able to use what you learned to create and monetize your website?

You always seem to be on top of trends in websites. Every website we've created together has been a blend of my collaborative marketing creativity and your website expertise. While the sites are under construction, we discuss my endgame along with the problems I want to solve. I've learned that a website has to tell the story of a product or service. It should be a “brochure” that highlights all of the key features along with tips on how to use them. I have implemented everything from on-site networking events, paid content submission and distribution, banner ads and directory listings to monetize my sites.

Question 6. Tell us about you: Who are you? What do you do? How can people find you online?

I am a woman on a mission to spread the message about the financial benefits of collaborative marketing partnerships. If more women joined forces to market together, there would be more female millionaires than men. I create a high profile large scale collaborative marketing projects with LinkedIn as the “backdrop” that busy business and professional women from a wide range of industries can plug their businesses into. My vision is to be the catalyst that changes the way women view and use LinkedIn for business collaboration to grow their sales and support each other so they can build multi-million dollar ventures. I am working with Kim to launch SmartWomenPartner.com before December 9, 2018.

Question 7. What was the most important thing that you gained during your learning experience?

I gained a new skill that I can monetize. I am able to manage the back end of a WordPress site. There are so many busy businesswomen who can benefit from outsourcing the management of content being published on their blog and shared on social media, having their widgets updated with fresh content, having someone upload ads and videos, etc. Would I ever offer such a service? No, I would just outsource the project to Kim. 🙂
